Twenty Things I Want to Tell My Sons
Chapter 2

Be a Man of Prayer

Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Philippians 4:6-7

Spending time with God in prayer is another key to successful living. To live a life of prayer is to live a life by the power of God. Take everything to God in prayer. Intercede for the people around you. Pray for your children. Pray for your marriage. Pray for your work and your clients. Pray for your neighbors, your pastor, your friends, everyone you know. Ask God to bless you and prosper you. Ask God for wisdom. Ask God to mold you into the man of God he has called you to be. Talk to God about everything. There is nothing too trivial or too large to bring to God in prayer. He longs for us to seek Him, to spend time with Him. David said it was “better to spend a day in God’s presence than a thousand years anywhere else”. (Psalm 84) Whenever you feel overwhelmed by life, go to God in prayer over the matter. And God’s peace, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your heart and mind in Christ Jesus. Let God’s Spirit lead you during prayer – sometimes He has specific things He would like for you to pray about. So remember to listen when praying. We are also told to “Pray without ceasing” or to “Pray at all times”. This is practicing God’s presence and is one of the keys to walking successfully as a Christian. Praying at all times is being ever mindful of God during your daily life. Life becomes a continual dialog with God, from waking to lying down. Do this. We are also told to “Ask and you shall receive” and that we can “move mountains” through prayer. This is God’s promise that He hears our prayers and answers them. Prayer unleashes the power of God in our lives and in the lives of those around us. Prayer changes things – in us and in the world around us. Prayer is the single most powerful activity that you can do. There is nothing more powerful than prayer. So be a man of prayer. Spend time with God regularly. Do not neglect this and your life will be greatly improved. You will walk with God.

"Choose you this day whom you will serve.....but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD."
