Twenty Things I Want to Tell My Sons
Chapter 7

Be Spirit Led

For all who are being led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.

 Romans 8:14

It is the Spirit who gives life. Read Romans Chapter 8. Read it many times. Then read it some more. Being led by Godís Spirit is one of the most important aspects to walking with God. The Spirit is God's power in your life. Without the Holy Spirit you cannot understand God's word or live the life God has called you to live. Without the leading of Godís Spirit, we are like blind men on a racetrack - weíre going to do a lot of damage to everyone around us and probably get killed in the process. So learn how to be led by the Spirit. Practice hearing His voice, His urgings, His leading. Fast and pray until you can sense Godís Spirit at all times. This may take years, it may happen overnight. Just make sure it happens eventually.

You received Godís Spirit when you were born again and are filled with the Spirit already if you are a believer (Eph 1:13) Ė that is not what Iím talking about. That has already happened and never changes. And Iím not talking about speaking in tongues or falling out slain in the Spirit or anything faddish like that. Iím talking about knowing what to say and when to say it, what to pray and how to pray it, whether to turn right or left, to stop or go. It is the ongoing minute-by-minute daily leading of the Holy Spirit that I am talking about. Eventually you can feel it. He is always there, and you can commune with Him anytime you want. He provides guidance in every area of your life. Sometimes He takes the initiative and calls first; sometimes you take the initiative and ask for His guidance. Sometimes you are very aware of His leading, other times you have no idea you are being led by the Spirit. However, it is important that you get to a point where you can have continual fellowship with Godís Spirit. It is vital to your walk with God. (In my case, I had to fast and pray over a period of 3 years to receive the ability to hear Godís Spirit. But I was a pretty hard case. When it occurred, it was palpable and it was permanent. It never goes away.)

Know that the Holy Spirit is there all the time once you are a believer, whether you are aware of Him or not. Some of the evidences of the indwelling of the Holy Spirit are: conviction of sin, a desire to know God, a hunger and thirst for God's word, a desire to be with other believers, a desire to worship God, a desire to overcome sin and live a holy and pure life, belief in God and His word. These are some of the signs of life, that God's Spirit has made you alive in Christ. Godís Spirit will lead you into all truth and righteousness, helping you understand God's word. He will help you make a difference in the lives of the people around you in ways you cannot imagine. And be careful not to grieve the Holy Spirit (Eph 4:30-32). This is easy to do. When you do, repent and get back on track. Cultivate the fruit of the Spirit in your life (Galatians 5:22-26). And finally, be obedient to the leading of the Spirit. Sometimes you may not want to, but you must. For all who are being led by the Spirit of God, these are the sons of God.

"Choose you this day whom you will serve.....but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD."
