Twenty Things I Want to Tell My Sons
Chapter 8

Love Really is the Answer

But now faith, hope, love, abide these three; but the greatest of these is love.

I Corinthians 13:13

You can have it all, do it all, be it all, but if you don’t have love you are nothing (I Cor 13). Love really is the most important thing that there is. All of your relationships should be characterized by love. All that you do should be done in love. We are to love God with all our strength, soul and might (Deut 6:4-9). When they asked Jesus what the greatest commandment was, He said it was to “Love God” and to “Love others” (Matt 22:35-40). He said that the entire law and prophets is based on these two things. Paul wrote that when we love one another we fulfill the law of God (Rom 13:8-10). Jesus went as far as to tell us to love our enemies and those who persecute us (Matt 5:43-48). This is hard. I’m not sure we can do this on our own and I believe we need God’s help with this one. That is why it is important to feel God’s love, to be filled with His love; to experience His love for you and His love for the people around you. Again, this may require fasting and prayer. (It did in my case). It may happen immediately when you are born again. It may happen gradually over time. Once you break through and experience God’s love, it is there forever. It never goes away, kind of like His Spirit. (Maybe they are connected.) It is awesome to be filled with God’s love. Make sure you get to this point in your walk with God. If you don’t, nothing else matters. Loving God and loving others is at the core of true Christianity.
