Twenty Things I Want to Tell My Sons
Chapter 18

Get Wisdom

How blessed is the man who finds wisdom and the man who gains understanding.

Proverbs 3:13

For whatever reason, foolishness is bound up in children. As you mature as a man you must learn to set aside childish things and become wise. Wisdom is Godís instructions for living a life of significance Ė eternal significance. Wisdom is not something we are born with. It must be learned, acquired. Proverbs makes it clear that the beginning of wisdom is to fear God (Prov 9:10). That is, to believe in God and the Judgment to come. James tells us that if anyone lacks wisdom he should ask God for wisdom and God will give it to him (James 1:5). And we are told that as we get wisdom, we should also acquire understanding (Prov 4:7).

Godís word is filled with wisdom, so read it and learn. Life will also teach you wisdom (usually the hard way). You must seek wisdom; you must make a conscious decision to acquire wisdom. As a general rule it will not just magically accumulate in your life all by itself. To have wisdom is better than to have great riches (Prov 8:11, 16:16). You will be blessed to find wisdom and you will be a blessing to those around you as well. But in too much wisdom there is grief, so do not weary yourself over the acquiring of too much wisdom (Eccl 1:18). Acquire the wisdom that you need to live your life well. Solomon, the wisest man in the history of the world concluded that to eat, drink and simply enjoy your work and your life is also good (Eccl 2:24).

"Choose you this day whom you will serve.....but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD."
