Twenty Things I Want to Tell My Sons
Chapter 19

Stay the Course

"But the seed in the good soil, these are the ones who have heard the word in an honest and good heart, and hold it fast, and bear fruit with perseverance.”

Luke 8:15

Never give up, never surrender (Galaxy Quest). Staying the course means persevering in good times and in bad. We are told that when we persevere under trial, we receive the crown of life (James 1:12).  In Romans we read that perseverance brings about proven character (Rom 5:3-5). Regardless of how many times you fail, get up and keep going (Prov 24:16). Finish the race – “life is a marathon, not a sprint”. And like a marathon, life is not always going to be easy. And don’t just drag across the finish line, but finish strong. Give it everything you’ve got. And it is important to finish what you start (Jumanji).

Regarding struggles against sin, if we do not persevere in this area, we can lose the battle - and often whatever we are struggling with will overtake us and rob us of our Christian walk. This is where you get a Christian who is an alcoholic, or who uses profanity, or who fools around on his wife or who has lost his faith. A lack of perseverance can be lethal to a Christian’s walk, so it is really important to stay the course when dealing with sin in your life. Once you fall to a major sin, it is very hard to recover your walk. It tends to mark you for the rest of your life. Perseverance is how we finish strong in the faith. No matter how bleak it looks, how hopeless it may seem, how many times you may have failed, I still say there is hope. Never give up, never surrender. For tomorrow is another day, and you never know what the tide may bring (Castaway). Stay the course (the Patriot).
